Log: Good Race, eventhough I faded from Mile 22, it's still a 20min PR after 2 years of many bouts injury, and a 1hr course PR - from my first Marathon ever @ SVM 2008.
We had good weather 50F at the start but did warm up to about 63F by the finish, so I did feel the heat affect me a little the last 4-6M. Met almost everyone at the start near UPS Sweat check, except for Ron & Dennis. Ron, Jimmy, Latch, Gary and I did start and tried to pace at 3:30, but Jimmy took off fast and he just kept on going with Latch so Ron, Gary and I ran roughly in the same loose pack until the Half. I ran with Ron from Mile 1 onwards to about 6 because we needed to throttle back the pace to something around 7:55/M. I got a Kamikaze wasp sting on my right thigh at Mile 8 - along with our pack of 3:30 runners. It hurt like hell and started to swell up with my quads tighten. I managed to run with it over the next 18M ignoring the pain as it wasn't affecting my heartrate or breathing. I passed Latch around Mile 9 as he struggled with his hamstring. My pacing was on target 7:55/M average until Mile 12, the 3-4 miles of sloppy hills and turns I slipped a little on the pace, but still managed to keep it average at 7:58/M until Mile 16. I was wedged between Gary ahead and Ron behind. After the Half way point, and the climb through Mile 14 I was slowly gaining ground on Gary when he got cramp on right hamstring, then we ran together after we got back on Los Gatos Creek Trail for a while until he got cramp on the left hamstring. So I continued on alone. From there through to Mile 21, a little fatigue set in maybe due temps being above 60F, and I managed to keep it at 8:00/M average. It was a real nice boost seeing the RAs support near Mile 7 and 20 on the course. Ron passed me on Mile 22 as he tried to spur me on, but I hit a lapse, took my last Roctane and Lava salt. Then I saw Coach Jean on his bike and he encourage and coached me and Ron through the last 4 Miles. I wasn't able to catch Ron, but I did roadkill 2 runners the last 2 Miles thanks to Coach Jean spotting them.
I was happy to see Ron and Vu at the Finish area with Jimmy who ran a 3:20. I went to the first aid and got the bee sting looked at, got ice for it and cooled down, stretched as we saw Adona come in for her Boston Qualifer. Hanoch was right behind her. Batsheva finished around 5hrs. We have a nice lunch at Chili's.
The support from the team and the comeraderie was awesome, by far the best team experience to-date. Oh, and I did see Dean Karnazes finish way behind us in his Athenian outfit for Halloween and 2500th anniversary of Athens first run by Pheidippides. BTW, he was running "barefoot"
