Pace This

If you've been to a race lately, you've probably seen them. Some have the numbers posted on their backs, others carry lightweight wooden sticks with the figures hoisted in the air for easy spotting. Whatever the means of display, pace teams have become a very popular concept lately.

We've raised $5,117.48 for our cause.

The Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative (BAWSI) is a public benefit, nonprofit corporation with a mission to create programs and partnerships through which women athletes bring health, hope and wholeness to our community. Founded in 2005 by Marlene Bjornsrud and US Olympic and World Cup star Brandi Chastain, women athletes of all sports and all ages empower girls and women to stretch their legs and their limits through BAWSI’s programs.

BAWSI was created to build a long-lasting and meaningful platform for women in sports by connecting women athletes with girls in underserved communities who do not play sports due to a lack of money, opportunity, or encouragement from home and who are prime targets for health problems. What began as a health initiative has expanded; women athletes are not only role models of health, but also of hope and wholeness.

Young girls are now sweating their way to good health and positive self-esteem while being shown options for their futures that come from being an empowered woman, including the possibility of attending college. Through BAWSI, women athletes are mobilized to transform the health and self-confidence of girls in underserved communities. More than 500 women athletes from the Bay Area’s major universities, community colleges, and high schools have served as volunteers.
